Fall 2019 flat-rate pricing

September 11, 2019 by thegarrick

Why is the Fall Gathering in 2019 going to a flat-rate pricing structure?

Early-Bird/Late Rate

Year after year, our volunteers were burning out because it was so hard to plan anything when literally half of the registrations would come in during the final week. This repeatedly caused stress as committees struggled to figure out how to downscale for possible smaller numbers followed by scrambling to change things when the numbers usually (but not always) went up a lot in the final week, even up to the night before.

While it’s nice to ask people to sign up early to help prevent that, simply asking in the past hasn’t made the difference.

As keeping volunteers coming back is an important goal, we decided to make this a priority, even if it required a change in payment policy to make this work.

We have devised a change that we hope will be successful in achieving that.

Flat Rates

The Fall 96 Committee has worked hard to create a reasonable set of flat rates for this Gathering instead our previous sliding scale plan based upon income.

Here’s why:

1)  Marketing with a sliding scale is really confusing! Organizations need to be able to more simply answer the question, “How much is your event?” When rates could vary so greatly between the high end and low end, budgeting is very difficult as well.

2)  We also have found that the sliding scale was alienating many men of higher incomes who felt too much of the burden was falling upon them; we were losing them from CMG. The flat rate gives them the chance to feel like they can register at a fair price, then if they feel like being generous, donate extra to help CMG’s success, without being required to.

This is a bit of an experiment, but organizations have to take some chances to grow!  We’re hopeful that many higher-income men will still donate extra to help with our success.

Financial Aid will still be available for those for whom the rates are still prohibitive; we encourage those men to take advantage of early-bird registration to achieve maximum savings. And we’re giving them about eight weeks notice and multiple reminders to bring in as many of them as possible.

Please note that the early-bird flat fee we have come up to is LESS than the lowest tier rate for the last fall Gathering in Julian, which was well-attended by men at all tiers. With that, the new flat-rate should not be such a big number as to be off-the-chart of lower-incomed men.

If a first-timer learns about CMG during the November 1-7 last-minute window, he will be allowed to pay at the standard rate, so higher pricing won’t dissuade him from coming.

If you’d like to comment at FallGathering@theCMG.org, your feelings on this will be heard, but at least for 2019, the plan is in motion.

We very much hope to see you over the weekend of Nov. 9-11, 2019!

Hot Springs Weekend in the Eastern Sierra

Friday, October 4 – Sunday, October 6, 2019

Dates: Friday, October 4 – Sunday, October 6, 2019
Time: 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Opera begins at 1:30 p.m.)
Location: We will meet at Keough’s Hot Springs on Friday, from 2:00 p.m. on.
RSVP: Please RSVP with your lodging preference [click here]
Cost: We have reserved one modular cabin and three tent cabins at Keough Hot Spring. See below for prices. Food and drinks, including water, will be the responsibility of each attendee.
Getting there: Please see below for directions. Carpooling is encouraged!

Join your CMG brothers for a fun and healing weekend in the Eastern Sierra of California.

We will be meeting at Keough’s Hot Springs starting at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 4th. The area is roughly equidistant from Los Angeles and San Francisco. We can discuss our itinerary once we all get together. Possibilities include shopping and dining in nearby Bishop as well as exploring some of the non-commercial hot springs in the Mammoth Lakes area. Nighttime activities may include a movie in Bishop, a heart circle, and/or a heavenly clothing-optional communal soak in one of the several warm natural pools on the road to Keough’s H. S. The views from the Eastern Sierra are incomparable as are the wide variety of nearby hot springs.

Keough’s Hot Springs is at the end of Keough’s Hot Springs Rd., which is 7 miles south of Bishop, CA on Hwy. 395. From the S.F. Bay Area, you can take 580 to 205 to 5 in Manteca, to 120, which connects with 395 in Lee Vining. From Southern California, 15 connects with 395 in Hesperia.

For the information on accommodations and pricing, please click here. Please note the difference between camping (have to pay for showers and use of the pools) and the tent cabins and modular cabin.

Places to stay include the several options above at Keough’s Hot Springs as well as several hotels and motels nearby in Bishop. We encourage you to check out what’s available at Keough’s website and let us know your preference. We have already reserved three Tent Cabins and the one Modular Cabin for Friday night through Sunday night.

WHAT TO BRING: Snacks; comfortable shoes; a reusable water container and water, and; sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, and hat). Also, you’ll want to bring a bathing suit and sandals or flip-flops (while many of the non-commercial hot springs are clothing optional, a bathing suit is required at Keough’s). Finally, consider the possibility of rain and cold nights. Average temperatures for nearby Bishop in October at that time are a high of 85 and a low of 45.

WHERE:  Keough’s Hot Springs, 7 mi. south of Bishop, CA

OUR CHAMPION:  Charlie Malarkey

San Francisco Opera in Golden Gate Park

August 18, 2019 by thegarrick

California Men’s Gatherings presents…

San Francisco Opera in Golden Gate Park

Sunday, September 8, 2019

Date: Sunday, September 8, 2019
Time: 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Opera begins at 1:30 p.m.)
Location: Meet at 12:30 p.m. in front of the entrance to the Whole Foods Market at Haight and Stanyan Streets.
RSVP: Please RSVP so we know to look for you [click here]
Getting there: Concert attendees are urged to make use of public transportation. There are many public transit options (MUNI) including the N Streetcar and 7, 33, 37, 43 and 66 buses.

Join your CMG brothers for a picnic in Golden Gate Park to listen to the sounds of San Francisco Opera.

We’re talking about arias al fresco to celebrate the opening of San Francisco Opera’s 97th season. Featuring the acclaimed San Francisco Opera Orchestra and stars from the fall season.

We will be meeting in front of Whole Foods at Haight and Stanyan at 12:30 p.m. in order to buy food and beverages and find a good spot. As you can see from the photo below, these concerts draw a large crowd. Food and beverages will also be available for sale at the event.

WHAT TO BRING: Picnic lunch; comfortable shoes; plenty of water and sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, and hat) and a blanket or towel to rest on. I think dogs are OK, but they would need to be well-behaved and comfortable around lots of people.

WHERE: Meet at the entrance to Whole Foods at 12:30 pm

OUR CHAMPION: Charlie Malarkey

RSVP: [click here] Please RSVP!
