CMG 100th (4th Virtual) Spring Gathering – Connecting Men at the Heart since 1978

CMG’s 100th Gathering will open with a look at Sexuality and Masculinity. In 1978, the very first Gathering was created to look at men’s place and attitudes in modern society. Nearly 43 years later, we’ve come a long way, but there is more work to do! Of course we’ll have some FUN along the way. We always do.
Masculinity and Sexuality:
The Saturday morning Community Gathering will feature Jared Sampson who presents on this topic to college students. Yes, the very first opportunity Dan Savage got to influence young people’s minds [before the internet] was by speaking at colleges and universities. Jared is continuing that work as a young gay black man. We’ll continue our conversations throughout the weekend starting from this point. We hope that we’ll all see how far we’ve come and how much more work there is to do.
CMG is all about expanding the safe space to include as many different ways of being a man as possible. And you can show up and be you, with others! We’d love it if you thought about presenting a WORKSHOP or an act in the TALENT/NO TALENT SHOW. Fun workshops in the past have included “Naked Body Painting” and “Nude Lubed Shaving Cream Hairdos and Twister”. While those might be hard to do virtually, we are creative men, we can DO this!
There will be links in your confirmation to help you submit a Workshop or be in the Show. Please consider this: the Gathering is about us all sharing of ourselves. But here are the links NOW if you’re ready to send in those Workshops and Performances!

Sexuality and Masculinity are not the same
There is a difference between sexuality and masculinity, however society often emasculates men who do not identify as straight or who do not display hyper masculine behavior. There are far too many toxic ideas around masculinity and sexual orientation. At a young age we are told that there are things that makes a man a man. Much of what we are taught about masculinity is actually very damaging and often times adds to the issues men face when they identify as homosexual. That can be even more complex in communities of color as well.
While change is occurring, there is still room for improvement in this space. Far too often people are bullied or worst because of their sexual orientation, with their manhood called into question. Because much of the negativity is learned behavior, children are facing issues that their minds cannot fully comprehend and that has troubling outcomes as these children grow into adulthood.
As it relates to sexual orientation, oftentimes there is an attack on one’s manhood when discussing sexual orientation. Because there are a lot of ill-informed individuals, it makes it hard for many men to live their truth and open up about their sexuality. A lot of men live on the down low to protect their masculinity.
